Simple ways to keep your livestock healthy, comfortable, and ready for the ring this fair season
The Ramona Junior Fair is one of our favorite community traditions. It’s a chance to celebrate the hard work of local youth, showcase animals raised with care, and bring neighbors together.
Whether you’re preparing animals for the Ramona Junior Fair or getting ready for livestock shows and auctions throughout San Diego County, we know families from Ramona, Poway, Escondido, Valley Center, Lakeside, Alpine, Fallbrook, and beyond spend months preparing for these events.
As fair week approaches, a little extra attention can help your animals stay comfortable, healthy, and looking their best.
Start with a Clean, Comfortable Space
Fair week can be exciting, but it can also be stressful for animals. New surroundings, unfamiliar noises, extra people, and busy schedules can all make animals feel a little unsettled.
One of the easiest ways to help them stay comfortable is by keeping their stall clean and dry.
Fresh bedding provides a comfortable place to rest and helps reduce stress. Regular cleaning throughout the day helps keep animals cleaner, healthier, and more presentable for judging and the auction.
Adding a stall freshener can help control odors and moisture, creating a more comfortable environment for both animals and exhibitors.
Stay on Top of Grooming
Presentation matters at the fair, but grooming is about more than appearances. Regular brushing helps remove dirt and loose hair, improves coat condition, and gives you a chance to check your animal for any issues.
Depending on your project animal, consider keeping these basics on hand:
- Brushes and combs
- Hoof picks
- Clippers and touch-up tools
- Show halters and leads
- Towels and grooming cloths
Don’t wait until the day before the auction to start grooming. A little attention each day often produces the best results.
Help Keep Flies Away
Nothing is more distracting to an animal than a constant battle with flies.
San Diego County summers can be warm, and fairgrounds often attract more insects than animals are used to at home. Fly sprays and other fly control products can help keep animals comfortable and reduce irritation throughout the event.
Keeping stalls clean and removing waste regularly can also help minimize fly pressure.

Stick to Familiar Routines
Animals tend to do best when their daily routines stay consistent.
Try to maintain regular feeding and watering schedules throughout the fair. Bringing the same feed and supplies your animal is accustomed to can help avoid unnecessary stress and digestive upset.
Fresh, clean water is especially important during warm summer weather.
Common Fair Week Mistakes to Avoid
Even experienced exhibitors can overlook the basics during a busy fair week.
A few common mistakes include:
- Waiting until the last minute to groom
- Changing feed right before the fair
- Forgetting extra bedding and supplies
- Inconsistent watering schedules
- Skipping daily stall cleaning
Sticking to familiar routines and preparing ahead of time can help create a smoother, less stressful experience for both exhibitors and animals.
Stay Calm and Be Patient
Animals often pick up on our energy. If you’re feeling nervous about judging or auction day, there’s a good chance your animal will notice, too.
Spend a little extra quiet time with your animal throughout the fair. Regular handling, calm interactions, and familiar routines can help them feel more secure in a busy environment.
Supporting the Next Generation
One of the best parts of fair season is seeing the dedication local youth put into their projects. Behind every animal is months of hard work, early mornings, learning experiences, and personal growth.
The auction is about much more than selling an animal. It’s a chance for young 4-H and FFA exhibitors to showcase what they’ve learned, build confidence, and be recognized for the effort they’ve invested throughout the year.
For buyers, it’s also an opportunity to support local youth and agriculture in our community.

Why Local Fairs Matter
Events like the Ramona Junior Fair help preserve agricultural traditions and provide valuable learning opportunities for young exhibitors.
Whether you’re raising livestock, purchasing an auction animal, volunteering, or simply attending the fair, your participation helps support the future of agriculture in San Diego County.
We’re proud to be part of a community that continues to invest in the next generation of ranchers, farmers, and animal caretakers.
Getting Ready for Auction Day
As auction day approaches, focus on the basics:
- Clean bedding
- Fresh water
- A well-groomed appearance
- Proper fly control
- Plenty of rest and calm handling
A comfortable animal is often a more confident animal, and confidence shows.
Most importantly, remember that your animal may be feeling the excitement and energy of the day, too. Staying calm, sticking to routines, and spending a little extra time together can go a long way toward helping them feel secure.
